How to furnish a long and narrow bathroom

Furnishing a long and narrow bathroom is certainly one of the most difficult challenges even for the most famous interior designers. Finding a solution that combines elegance and functionality in a long and narrow rectangular room requires careful and meticulous planning especially if you want everything you need to relax. The ability to make the most of the space is undoubtedly the first requisite: every inch can be precious, and the choice of the right fixtures can prove to be decisive for the style of environments like long and narrow bathroom.

A good furnishing project must begin with a study of the positioning of the bathroom fixture that takes up the most space, in our case, a shower or bathtub. The rule of thumb is to install a shower cubicle in small bathrooms as it takes up less space than a bathtub. The shower should be placed on the wall furthest from entrance. If the idea of having a bathtub is indisputable and the bathroom is sufficiently large, you can also consider the installation of a bathtub, possibly under a window (in a space that would otherwise end up unused in any case).

After talking about bathtub and shower installation, it is time to think of the remaining bathroom fixtures. If you are not planning a bathroom renovation that includes masonry work, the installation of the toilet, bidet and washbasin will be conditioned by the position of existing water pipes and drains.

If you are setting up a bathroom with a width equal to or less than 15 feet all the sanitary fittings should be designed to be placed along a single wall: in this way you will be perfectly aware of having left enough space to move around easily in the bathroom.

Space-saving furniture for a long and narrow bathroom

A small bathroom requires furniture and accessories designed to offer maximum functionality in minimal spaces. For example, you could think of arranging a mirror wall unit above the washbasin to have an all-in-one piece of furniture suitable for storing toiletries and very useful for shaving, putting on make-up or simply looking at yourself. On the contrary, the cabinet on which the washbasin sits should have suitable chest of drawers or alternatively, a large shelf. A separate chest of drawers on wheels could be equally useful because they are movable and allow you to clean the bathroom easily. Shifting our attention to the bathroom accessories which are best for a long, narrow bathroom, glass holders, soap holders and dispensers prepared for wall installation turn out to be perfect because they do not take up space on the washbasin worktop. On the other hand, next to the toilet, there could be an elegant, freestanding roll holder with toilet brush specifically designed to have two accessories in one.

If the washbasin is positioned on the same wall as the bidet, there could be enough room for a soap holder and towel holder between the two-bathroom fixtures. In the interest of having a truly exclusive design setting, it is essential to choose bathroom accessories that combine with the style of the furnishings: on the market you can find, for example, modern freestanding roll holders with toilet brush for a contemporary style bathroom or more classic models for a vintage-style bathroom. As for finishes and materials, it is possible to find combo chromed brass, iron, or stainless-steel accessories that meet every bathroom furnishing need even when the bathroom is long and narrow.

A final trick to give a special charm to these "unfavourable" sized environments is to focus on mirrors and lighting because, if masterfully placed, they can give visual sensations of having an abundance of space even in narrow environments.
