Designing a long and narrow bathroom Often, we find ourselves having to renovate an old house trying to bring it back to its old splendour, or to adapt it to the standards dictated by the trends of the time.
Renovating a home is never easy, because very often you have to deal with already existing environments. Sometimes, the kitchen and bathroom cannot be moved due to the high cost of moving the plumbing. In these cases, the only thing to do is to accept the situation, but try to adapt the space to your needs and canons of beauty. This is very difficult, if you find yourself in front of an oversized, long and narrow bathroom. The first impression is that you can never get a pleasant result, but architects and furniture magazines teach you that this is not the case: even in such spaces it will be possible to create the bathroom of your dreams. What you must do is come to some compromises and follow simple rules.
Design
In designing a long and narrow bathroom the secret is, first, to place, at least ideally on a sheet of millimetre paper, the most cumbersome element: the bathtub or the shower tray. Only after having established where to place the tub, will it be possible to start thinking about a place for other sanitary ware and furniture. If you have the width, then you can choose a close-to-wall bathtub, or one of the modern tub/showers, which will fit in under the window. In this way, the most cumbersome element will be placed opposite the door.
Useful advice
There are different possible solutions. Generally, if the bathroom is narrow, and therefore is not more than a metre and a half wide, sink, toilet and other sanitary wares should be placed on the longest wall. This is because it is necessary to create the required space to move freely. In this case, to give the idea of a bathroom which is wider than it actually is, it is advisable to use wall-mounted sanitary fittings, which are very modern.
Minimum measures required by law
Beyond one's own ideas and available space, it is also necessary to deal with the law, which requires the creation of safe and functional environments. For this reason, between the bidet and the toilet there must be a distance of no less than 20 cm. The same space of 20 cm must be left between the bidet and the shower. On the other hand, a 10-cm gap between the toilet and the shower is sufficient.
Optimizing space
To make a long and narrow bathroom seem wider, it is necessary to choose the right colour for the walls. In general, architects suggest tiling the shorter wall with very colourful hues, while the side walls will be tiled using a lighter shade. In the same way it is good to pay attention to the choice of light fixtures: hanging lamps are not recommended, because they accentuate the long and narrow dimension of the room. It is preferable, instead, to use wall lights or spotlights. We recommend a low wall, separating the toilet and the bidet from the sink. The construction of this wall is an important trick to visually help break up the length of the room.
